The past year has been a challenging but exciting one. So much has been achieved at HAWS all due to the dedicated efforts of the management committee and the HAWS staff. This year is of particular interest as HAWS turns 50 and the growth over these years has been phenomenal. I am not going to highlight the 50th anniversary tonight and would urge you all to read the local newspapers at the beginning of August which will give you a good background of how HAWS started and what we have managed to achieve in these 50 years.
My term of office as Chairperson for the financial year ending March 2018 was brief. Only six weeks but I also have to take into account the following six months leading up to this year’s AGM. What a challenging time this has been. However, I have been ably assisted by a dedicated and passionate management committee and it’s thanks to these wonderful volunteers with their expertise and knowledge which has enabled me to step up to the plate and cope with the daily challenges I have had to face as Chairperson.
It would be very remiss of me not to first start off by mentioning our previous Chairperson, Ilze Smith, as well as her late husband, Deon Smith, who have been associated with HAWS for the past 10 years. The job of Chairperson is not an easy one, so thank you Ilze for all you have done for HAWS and we wish you everything of the best in your new ventures.
Ilze Smith, our Chairperson, has resigned and we wish her everything of the best in her new ventures. Her contribution to HAWS over the past 11 years has been outstanding and we must also not forget the late Deon Smith (Ilze's husband) who also contributed so much to HAWS. Our committee remains a strong and dedicated team, with the following members:
Chairperson - Pamela Quinn
Vice Chairperson and Education – Marlene Deneeghere
Treasurer - Alastair Lyle
Secretary – Cheryl Richardson
H.R – Gabi Brummer
Fund Raising – Rene Dewar
Hermanus Animal Welfare operates on two sites. The one is the kennel complex in Steenbras Street in the industrial area, where all our animals are kept. The second is the welfare charity shop in Mitchell Street in central Hermanus. At the kennels there are eight permanent members of staff headed by Peter Hansen, the Kennel Manager.
